The 2022 Kenai River king salmon projection is still estimated to be well below escapement goals and the early run in May and June will be retention of king salmon under 34" size only . July 1st will start out with hook and release only and be monitored for the rest of the late run ending July 31st. and sockeye salmon fishing could be an alternative species during a king salmon closure at the same rate.
The Kenai River is a spectacular place to fish for chinook with small numbers entering the river during the first run in mid May through June. Fishing can be fair to good with much less boat traffic than the later run in July giving anglers a more pleasurable experience. The world record 97lb king salmon was taken in May.
The July run is more popular with a larger run and fish averaging 30 - 60 lbs. and ends July 31st.
Warning due to stiff regulations the Dept. of Fish & Game may change the laws to hook & release or close the king salmon fishery at anytime forcing you to fish for other species such as sockeye salmon or rainbow trout during your visit. The most popular method of fishing chinook is backtrolling plugs or spin & glos. The season bag limit is 2 king salmon from the Kenai river and only one per day.
